Acne and Hard Water

Almost everyone has had acne at some point in their life whether it be inconveniently before prom or the morning of an interview. Acne is common, especially for teenagers going through puberty, however there are many ways to prevent it that don’t include special treatment. One way to help prevent acne is by having soft water.

The Cause of Acne

Acne occurs when your pores or hair follicles are clogged by either excessive oil, dead skin, or other things that come in contact with your skin. When the pores get plugged they irritate the skin and cause inflammation or swelling in the form of what we call pimples.

Hard Water and Acne

A potential pore plugger is soap scum. Soap scum is soap residue that may remain on your skin after you wash your face, shower, or take a bath. If you have soft water, most if not all the soap scum should be properly washed from your body. However, if you wash with hard water, the minerals in the water may make the soap less soluble and harder to wash increasing the amount of soap scum on your body. Therefore, increasing the amount of plugged pores you may have and potential breakout points for pimples.

Soft Water Solutions

Therefore, if you notice that skin treatment isn’t helping you and that your house has other signs of hard water such as scaling then you ought to consider getting a water softener. A water softener will help filter out the hard minerals in your water causing your skin irritation.
